Kinesiology, chiropractic and nervous system

The complexity of the human nervous system is awesome. Experts estimate that there are over 100+ billion nerve cells in the brain alone. The amount of information that is needed to perform simple tasks is great.

The nervous system can be viewed as a busy two-way street. When performing any action, the brain and spinal cord sends nerve signals to the body. Every muscle, every organ and every cell is meant to perform an action because the brain tells it to. When you pick up food to put in your mouth, your brain tells your fingers to grasp the food. The brain then tells the jaw to chew the food, the throat to swallow the food, and the stomach to digest the food. The brain tells everything in the body how to do its job. These are called efferent signals.

Information also goes the opposite direction. Nerve impulses are also sent from all of the muscles, cells and organs to update the brain on the progress of a given action. In the same scenario, the fingers tell the brain that they have the food, the tongue tells you how the food tastes and the stomach tells the to stop eating because your full. These are called afferent signals.

However, accidents occur which causes a delay or stop in the information trying to get to its destination. One of the most common places for an accident occurs around the spinal column. At each level of the spinal column, spinal nerves exit through a hole called an intervertebral foramen. When one of the spinal bones moves out of its normal alignment, it can cause pressure on a spinal nerve. This is called a subluxation. A nerve does not function as it ought to when this pressure exists. This is what makes a patient feel not right.

The good news is that we treat the subluxations directly using manipulation, accupressure, cranial work and nutrition to help relieve pressure. Under our care, patients will begin to feel better relatively quickly. That is because when we just start to remove the pressure from the nerves, the slightest change in alignment will change in how the patient feels. We work to solve the underlying problems that allowed the subluxation to occur in the first place.
In the end, we do not really heal anyone. We help the body to move the way it was designed to so that the body can heal itself. —
